Congratulations Parents!!! You just had a baby!!
No matter what your journey was to even get to this point, I want you to know that you did great, and it will be fine. It will be one of the craziest adventures you can have, and you might lose some hair along the way, but the tiny humans will amaze you with something new every day.
Ok, let’s get down to it then. You are seeking a Nevada photographer to help you stop time and capture this milestone. I want to help you prepare for your Reno newborn home session in 5 stress-free steps.
WHO: Parents, the sweet new human, siblings if its not your first, and a local photographer that fits your visual style. Or if you have a friend who is good with camera technology that is an option. The main thing here is that you want to feel comfortable with bringing someone into your home to photograph this precious moment. Voice your boundaries if any ahead of time (ex: social media privacy, etc).
THE SPACE: My preferred space for a Reno newborn home session is clean, clutter-free, and well-lit. Every photographer is different, so make sure you have that conversation before your session. Spaces that tell a story as a family. Most of the time, it will be the baby’s nursery, living room, sunroom, and master bedroom during a session. The key here is to keep it simple. A freshly made bed, some non-distracting decor, and some natural light are all you need.
COLOR GUIDE: These photos will be printed, framed and mounted on the walls of your home, so you should want them to kind of match your home decor to have them up year-round. When choosing some clothes, it’s easiest to go the neutral color route. If you need some more inspiration, check out Style & Select’s Instagram reels. Just know that once a client books with me, I send a style guide that has some more helpful ideas.
WHEN: Booking an in-home session for newborns is best between 5-20 days after they are born. During this window, the baby will be sleepier, easier to gently pose them in a wrap or just sit in your arms. It’s preferred that you consider booking a session 2- 4 months before you deliver.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Newborn sessions are slow-paced and baby-led, meaning we take moments for feeding, changing, and soothing as needed. I create a calm, cozy environment so your baby feels secure, and I never rush the process. Plan for the session to last 2–3 hours so we have time to capture those dreamy, snuggly moments without pressure.
